United Utilities – United Futures

BUPA Healthy Communities Award 2007 supported by the Department for Health

United Futures combined Groundwork’s community expertise with United Utilities’ resources to build local communities through work-placements, volunteering events and major environmental projects whilst building strategic business partnerships.

Processes

United Utilities (UU) owns and operates water, wastewater and electricity net-works in North West England. They manage utility infrastructure and transform business processes for customers throughout the UK and overseas and have 17,000 employees.

Initial joint projects between UU and Groundwork acted as a catalyst for partner-ship and greater community impact. The project aims to deliver a further 50 projects across the UK.

The partnership model has resulted in the development of locally owned sustainable projects covering a whole range of activities. These include United Futures LEAP (Local employment assistance programme), World Environment Day volunteering activities at 5 sites in the North West, supporting 54 schools to EMAS (Eco Management and Audit Scheme) accreditation and United Futures Employee Support Programme.

Impact

  • 21 unemployed people supported back into work.
  • Environmental projects have improved 159 acres of land over 12 sites.
  • 100 small businesses have improved their resource efficiency and benefited from reducing their water consumption.
  • Over 200 UU employees have been engaged leading to reduced staff turnover within this group.
