Manchester City Football Club

Impact on Society Award for a small company in association with the Institute of Directors

Formed as a community football project in 1894, the Club now has one of the strongest and most wide-ranging community programmes in Europe, working across key social themes and with some 370,000 people a year directly. At the same time the Club and its commercial sponsors have benefited from enhanced brand value.

City in the Community (CITC), Manchester City’s community programme,  embraces a range of community activities including three after school study  support centres; a community leisure centre and a range of schools enterprise projects, environmental management, special projects and events.

All funding and planning for the programme takes account of physical resources, transport, accommodation and the Club’s aspirations around local purchasing, environment and fairness. Since 2003, CITC has worked to ensure advance funding and sustained growth through targeted themes, the addressing of  identified need and quality monitoring of results for all stakeholders.

The CITC programmes work in amongst communities, at times when they are needed, often with night time or midnight projects, and weekends and school holidays. They generate self and mutual respect and always aim for and  improved neighbourhood for those involved.
